Are supplements dangerous?
If we believe by various commenters in the news, FDA regulators, and misinformed medical doctors the answer is YES!
We’re told that the supplement industry lacks the strict controls of the pharmaceutical industry (quality control, safety testing, regulatory oversight, etc.), and therefore we are taking our lives into our own hands when we take supplements.
The most recent information collected by the US National Poison Data System which is the annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, showed there were 0 deaths caused by any dietary supplements in the United States in 2008 (the latest year with complete information available).
Various data suggests that half of Americans take dietary supplements, which amounts to somewhere around 56 billion doses of supplements in a year. Of those 56 billion doses, there were NO (zip, zero, zilch, nada) deaths from the best available data we have.
Compare that to deaths from pharmaceutical drugs, which are well regulated and much safer than supplements, and then tell me how dangerous supplements are again.
UPDATE: While most supplements are exceedingly safe, there are some supplements that can cause issues. While the most common side-effect from supplements is going to be nausea, an upset stomach, and diarrhea, there are a few supplements that can cause serious trouble. Large amounts of iron can cause serious danger to children (that’s why they have child proof caps on them), and some uncommon herbal medicines like belladonna and foxglove can be deadly.
As always, it’s best to have a knowledgeable practitioner on your team who knows supplements and herbs and can direct you to the best choices for you.
Still most supplements out there – like probiotics, fish oil, and vitamins are exceptionally safe, while the Tylenol probably sitting in your medicine cabinet is the number one reason linked to acute liver failure. So next time you hear a rant about the danger or supplements, you can put it in perspective…
