TRANSCRIPT:
Hey Folks,

It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health, and in this quick video, I want to talk to you about CBD. CBD or cannabinadiol is the hot new trend of the moment with everything from CBD rubs and lotions, to CBD supplements, to CBD infused water.

Depending on who you believe it’s either a miracle cure for just about everything, or it’s just ‘snake oil’ or bogus.

Now having been working with people suffering with digestive issues and autoimmunity for over a decade now, I’ve seen a lot of fads come and go.

The dictionary definition of a fad is something taken up with great enthusiasm for a short period of time.

A couple of examples of fads over the past few years have been Vitamin D and methyl folate.

Now I’ve seen both Vitamin D and methyl folate really help some people, do nothing for others, and for a rare few people cause trouble.

Just because something is a fad, doesn’t mean that it’s worthless. But in a health fad, typically something with some value gets overblown, and we end up saying things like Vitamin D can do anything, or every one needs to be taking methyl folate. Then typically when people realize that the thing doesn’t provide miracle results they drop it and the fad dies out.

Before we talk more about whether CBD is a fad, let’s take a second to talk about what CBD is.

When we talk about CBD we’re talking about marijuana or cannabis. Now cannabis is a plant rich in hundreds and probably thousands of different chemicals, but two of the major ones that have been focused on on are THC and CBD.

THC is the intoxicating component of marijuana, and medically has also been found useful for pain, sleep, nausea, and appetite. Some evidence also suggests it might have usefulness in cancer treatment as well, which is exciting.

CBD is another major chemical in marijuana but it is completely different than THC. It has no intoxicating properties, so even if you took a whole boatload of it, you wouldn’t get stoned.

In fact CBD tends to be an anti-stoned substance, and most recreational weed out there has had the CBD bred to very low levels to avoid interfering with the intoxicating properties, so don’t try to get CBD from recreational pot.

CBD has two major properties we’re currently aware of. The first is that it calms and stabilizes the brain. If you Google CBD and epilepsy you can see some intense videos of kids having seizures that are quickly brought under control with CBD. We’ve also see that it’s helped with anxiety and insomnia.

The second property is that it’s a broad anti-inflammatory, acting on different pathways than other natural anti-inflammatories like cur cumin or boswellia. This makes it a useful tool for inflammatory conditions ranging from rheumatoid arthritis, to psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

As of the making of this video in early 2019, CBD is fully legal in all 50 US states as long as it doesn’t have any significant amounts of THC with it. While there are medical strains of marijuana available for smoking, most CBD out there is going to be an extract put in something else – from a pill, to a lotion or rub, to a beverage.

People ask, will this cause you to fail a drug test, and the answer is not very rarely. The tests are looking for THC, not CBD. The cheap urine tests can also give falsely positive results, even if you’ve never touched marijuana before. Otherwise the only way to test positive is to take a product that’s been mislabeled and actually has a significant amount of THC in it, or to take a whole boatload of a CBD product that has a small amount of THC in it, enough that you get enough THC to trigger the test, and for the high quality products, you’re typically going to need to take 100s or 1000s of milligrams of CBD, which is way higher than most people are going to be taking.

The other thing you need to be aware of is that much of the marijuana, and thus the CBD out there is low quality, and often treated with pesticides and fungicides. So I recommend only getting CBD from a reputable manufacturer who is testing their product for safety and purity.

Alright, so there you have it, let’s sum up…

CBD is a major component of marijuana with brain calming and stabilizing effects. It is also an anti-inflammatory. It is non-intoxicating and is not illegal.

Is it shaping up to be a fad? Yes.

Depending on when you’re watching this vlog the CBD ‘craze’ may have long gone, but regardless of the fact that it’s a fad, doesn’t mean that CBD is snake oil.

We still need a lot more study on CBD, but preliminary evidence, plus the experience of people trying it, show that it can be very helpful for many people.

We’ve personally seen it improve anxiety and mood, improve sleep, calm pain, and reduce inflammation, leading to better control of digestive issues and autoimmunity.

It’s definitely a tool we’ve found helpful. Just don’t get caught up thinking it’s a silver bullet that’s going to fix everything, because it isn’t.

I hope that helps clear things up.
