It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health. It’s cold and flu season again, and in this quick video, I want to talk to you about when you should use and when you should avoid cold medicine.
Before we can get to that we need to take a moment and talk about the cold and the flu, what are they?
There are four types of things that can infect us and cause problems – the first are viruses, the second are bacteria, the third is fungus, and the fourth are parasites.
By far the most common thing that does infect us modern humans are viruses and both the cold and the flu are viruses.
This means it’s critically important not to take antibiotics for everyday colds or the flu. Antibiotics do NOT work against viruses. Let me repeat that just to be sure it sunk in, antibiotics are 100% ineffective against viruses, they do not help at all. In fact, because we are experts in digestive issues and autoimmunity here at Aspire Natural Health, we’ve had many people come to us with digestive issues that either began or were made worse by the use of antibiotics. So unless your doctor has a specific reason for having you on antibiotics when you are sick with a cold or a flu, I would strongly recommend you consider avoiding antibiotics as they will not help. The issue of antibiotic resistance is a very serious issue and one of the reasons we’re dealing with it is because of doctors dashing off prescriptions for antibiotics, or people going to doctor and demanding antibiotics for colds and flus. Enough said.
Colds tend to be in your head and upper chest, so the main symptoms are runny nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, and tiredness. Flus on the other hand tend to be your whole body and most often have fevers, body aches and boat loads of fatigue. Sometimes the symptoms overlap with each other so it’s not always easy to tell what you’ve got but most of the time colds are going to be up here, and flus down here, and flus are going to tend to be more severe.
So when we get these symptoms, what is going on?
This is probably the most important concept in this video, so please make sure you’re focusing on what I’m about to say.
The symptoms you get when you’re sick with a cold or flu, do NOT come from the virus, they come from your immune system. So it’s your immune system that is giving you a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, a fever & chills, body aches, headaches, and that fatigue or tiredness.
Now it stinks being sick, as you can hear I’m at the tail end of a cold myself, and we crafty humans have come up with a bunch of different drugs to help us feel better, like aspirin or the NSAIDS like Tylenol, Advil and the many others, or cough suppressants, decongestants and others.
These definitely help us feel better and can make being sick less miserable. But should you take them?
Well, if we remember that the symptoms are not really caused by the virus, but by the immune system, than anything we do to reduce the immune system also reduces the activity of the immune system, which is a bad thing because we need our immune system to defeat the viruses and get well again.
And we have a few studies that suggest that the use of these medicines, especially fever reducers can prolong the length of infections.
So my general recommendation for people is to avoid the use of over the counter cold medicines as much as is possible. I know it stinks, heck I’ve just been through it, but for the vast majority of healthy people, it’s no big deal. Rest and recover and get through it.
Now where I do recommend the use of these medicines are if there are special circumstances, if the symptoms are too severe, or if they are preventing people from sleeping. Particularly congestion and coughing can keep people from being able to sleep at night, and sleep is probably your biggest cold and flu fighter on the planet.
So there you have it…
When should you take cold medicines for colds or the flu. If you are an otherwise healthy person, I do not recommend the routine use of these medicines. It’s better to just rest and deal with mild to moderate symptoms.
Now these medicines are very helpful if you have another reason to take them, the symptoms are really severe, or they’re preventing you from sleeping.
