TRANSCRIPT:

Hey Folks,

It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health, and in this quick video, I want to talk to you about specialization in medicine.

Last week we had a person contact us who was really suffering. And after we spent a few minutes talking to them it was clear we weren’t the right fit for them. That’s okay. We know that what we do isn’t right for everyone.

Our focus, our specialty, is helping people with digestive issues and autoimmune diseases. And we want to work with people who are interested in partnering with us and putting in the time and energy necessary to get better.

And we get that not everyone is interested in, or ready for that kind of work. That’s okay. So when it was obvious we weren’t the right fit for this person, we went searching to see if we could find them a better match. Because if you reach out to us and we’re not the right fit to help you, we will try our best to help you find a practitioner who is the right match for you.

And one of the things that we commonly see when we’re researching other practitioners is they’ll say things like “We specialize in…” and then list off like 50 different issues with everything between the top of your head and the bottom of your feet listed.

So let’s take just a minute to talk about specialization, and finding the right doctor or practitioner to help you.

We all know the MD world is full of specialists. You have heart doctors or cardiologists, and digestive doctors or gastroenterologists, and doctors for kids or pediatricians. MDs quickly found that knowing everything in the world of medicine was impossible, so they decided to split the body up into pieces and each specialty of medicine would focus on one area of the body.

And this can work very well. This specialization allows that doctor to know almost everything about that one part of the body, and be an expert in treating conditions of that part of the body.

The problem of course is that this can create a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster situation where each doctor is only looking at one part of a person, and no one steps back to look at the whole person and what’s going on for the entire person.

Now in alternative, natural, and holistic medicine, we often go to that other side. Not wanting to cut people up into pieces, and realizing that every part of a person is connected to every other part, many holistic providers specifically refuse to specialize.

And this can work too. Many holistic approaches which focus on the healing power of the body recognize that we don’t always have to treat a problem for that problem to get better. For example, by treating the gut we can improve someone’s mood, or by treating the gut we can improve someone’s autoimmune disease.

These two ideas – one that we shouldn’t cut a person into pieces, and two that by improving the health and function of the body we can improve many of its issues mean that most alternative practitioners don’t truly specialize.

But they will often put on their websites that they specialize in treating a huge list of health issues, or they specialize in a broad range of treatment types.

That isn’t specialization.

What they really mean when they say something like that is that they can help people suffering from those issues, or that they are skilled in those different treatment methods.

Alright, so there you have it…

If you’re looking for a health practitioner, one of the things you need to decide is if you want or need to see a specialist in your issues. There are many providers out there who are generalists who can help, but if you want someone who is focused deeply and has specific expertise in your issues you’re going to want a specialist.

If you’re checking out their website and you see a long laundry lists of issues they treat, especially if they’re all over the body, or you see a long list of different treatment types they work with, they are not a specialist.

That doesn’t mean they might not be awesome and be able to really help, but they’re not a specialist.

A specialist is going to focus on one or a handful of issues to work on, or one or a handful of different therapies that they are using, and really focus on mastering those things.

If that’s what you want or need, you’re going to want to make sure your practitioner specializes in the treatment of what you’ve got going on.
