Chronic stress hurts.

It raises your blood pressure, it shuts down your digestion and it causes your brain cells to die.

My experience has been that stress levels have skyrocketed in our modern lifestyles and the result is that people are crashing.

The most important things you can do to deal with stress are lifestyle related and mental/emotional.

Such as downsizing your life (less stuff, less commitments), surrounding yourself with supportive relationships (disassociate from negative people), LAUGHING, having fun, exercise, meditation and breath work, and reframing (it’s not the situation, it’s our response to the situation).

All of these are critical at getting to the root of stress, and while you’re working on that, here are two pills that I find extremely helpful for managing stress.

  1. Theanine (also called L-theanine) – an amino acid derived from green tea and concentrated in pill form. Theanine helps mellow people out. It encourages alpha brain wave activity, the same brain waves that people meditating develop. It is non-addictive, relieves anxiety and relaxes but does not put you to sleep (you may get relaxed and fall asleep). Due to it’s effectiveness, lack of toxicity and lack of addictiveness I ALWAYS recommend it before going to prescription anti-anxiety medication like Xanax or Klonopin. I find it extremely helpful for people who lie awake in bed and can’t sleep because of racing thoughts. 200-800mg taken 30 – 60 minutes before bed work fantastically. It can also be taken during the day to help people relax and relieve anxiety.
  2. Adaptogens – Adaptogens are a category of herbal medicines. Heavily researched by the Soviet Union and China from the 1950’s through the 80’s, these plant medicines were found to help animals (including humans) adapt to (thus the word adaptogens) stressful situations. Experiments with laboratory rats, cosmonauts, and office workers showed that adaptogens helped protect them from stress and keep them healthier.

While adaptogens are awesome, they are not magic, and while I use them extensively in my practice, just taking adaptogens without making the lifestyle changes listed above will NOT get to the root of the problem.

However, adaptogens are an extremely useful in our fast-paced lives and until you slow down, I believe they are a useful tool for just about everyone.

The biggest mistake with adaptogens (and most herbal medicines) is people not taking enough of them. While dosages will need to be individually decided based on your situation, generally speaking a maintenance dose is 2 capsules twice a day, or 1 teaspoon of tincture (liquid) once a day.

Stress is huge, and getting it under control is one of the single biggest things you can do to protect your quality of life, health and well-being. Consider using theanine and adaptogens and make the lifestyle changes to live a better life.
