My mom is dealing with metastatic cancer (cancer that has spread throughout her body) and she’s had a lot of prescriptions over the past two years.
Yesterday she had a physical therapist (PT) come to her home, and one of the things the PT did was a thorough medication check – going through all her cabinets and dragging out all her pill bottles, questioning my mom about them and comparing the prescriptions and what she’s currently taking against the various doctor prescriptions. It took about 45 minutes.
What we found out was that my mom wasn’t entirely clear on what she was taking, she wasn’t taking some of the medications at the correct dosages, and she had a lot of old half-used prescription bottles of potentially dangerous medications like steroids, thyroid medications, painkillers, etc. lying around.
PROPERLY prescribed prescription drugs are a significant killer in this country (estimates suggest at least 100,000 people each year), and we don’t have statistics on improperly consumed prescription drugs.
I’m very grateful to the PT for doing this, as it hasn’t been done over the past 2 years, and her MD’s certainly don’t have 45 minutes to sit down with her and do it.
So, all of this got me to thinking:
If you answer yes to any of these questions, I’d strongly recommend you have a health practitioner review them for you.
You might need something you’re not taking correctly or you might be taking things that you don’t need to take. At the very least you can save yourself money, and you might even save your life from dangerous reactions to medications.
As for the supplements my mom is taking, the PT nodded politely and made a note of them, which very likely no one will read, and even if they do, chances are they won’t understand why she’s taking what she’s taking.
I strongly recommend you have someone who understands conventional medicine look at your medications. And I strongly recommend you have someone who understands alternative / natural medicine look at your supplements.
Please do yourself a favor, understand what you’re taking and why, and make sure you’re taking it correctly to get the most benefit and not get hurt.
