Should I stop taking my medications or supplements?

And in this quick video I want to talk to you about a question that we get all the time. In fact, there’s a good chance you’re wondering it right now.

Should you stop your medications or supplements?

It’s a great question to be asking.

After all we don’t want to be taking things that aren’t helping us. And it’s often the case that as things change, things you once needed, you no longer do.

A lot of the people we work with who have digestive issues or autoimmunity need supplements or medications in the beginning of their care, but as they get healthier and their guts improve they no longer need those supplements or medications.

In fact, it’s a good idea every 6-12 months to stop and check-in on whether you need to keep taking your medications or supplements, especially if you’ve made a lot of changes – such as diet changes, or exercise, or having lost weight, or many other changes.

We get a lot of people asking us in the comments to these vlogs, on Facebook, or on blog posts or our podcasts if they should stop their medications or supplements.

And the universal answer is…We don’t know!

If we haven’t done an evaluation of you, which is in-depth and comprehensive, I have no idea if you should or shouldn’t be taking your medications or not.

So if you really want to know, let’s talk about whether an evaluation is right for you!

As a general rule you don’t want to stop or change any prescription drugs without talking with your doctor first. Get their guidance. If you don’t like your current doctor, find a different one, and work with a doctor who feels like the right fit for you.

When it comes to supplements, most are going to be much safer to change or stop. If they’re not critical for your health and safety, then it’s not a bad idea every 6-12 months to go off your supplements for 1-4 weeks.

If you notice you begin to feel worse or some symptoms that had gone away come back, then it’s a clear sign you still need some or all of those supplements.

If you actually feel better without the supplements, that’s a clear sign they’re not working well for you.

And if you really can’t tell a difference, than there’s a good chance you no longer need those supplements.

The only exception there is with maintenance supplements that are meant to foster long-term health, like low dose probiotics, or vitamin D, or fish oil. These aren’t taken to make you “feel” better, but to keep you healthy in the long-term.

So there you have it…

Unless we’ve done a thorough evaluation of you, I have no idea, but every 6-12 months it’s a good idea to evaluate whether you do need to keep taking both medications and supplements.
