In this Episode Dr. Gerstmar discusses:
-A key concept that is important for your long-term health and healing
-Why it’s important to address both physical stresses that are hurting your health AND mental-emotional stresses
-Why many people are able to eat problem foods while they’re on vacation without having any issues but when they come back home those same foods cause problems again
It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health
And in this quick video we’re going to pick up where we left off and finish our 2 part series on… the stress bucket which is a concept we share with the people we work with that they find incredibly helpful in understanding their health and healing
Last week in part 1 we talked about what stress is and the key concept that to your body and brain there is NO DIFFERENCE between physical stresses like being cold and hungry and mental stresses like sitting in traffic or getting yelled at by your boss.
So let’s get back to our stress bucket.
Both physical and mental-emotional stressors fill our bucket.
So things like gut dysbiosis, a stress to the system, fill the bucket. Nutrient deficiencies fill the bucket. Chronic inflammation, fills the bucket.
Then things like worrying about our finances, dealing with bosses and kids, making challenging diet changes, and on and on, all these things fill the bucket.
What happens when we fill the bucket beyond it’s capacity? Just like in real life things spill over. In the case of the stress bucket, when we fill it beyond it’s capacity with physical and psychological stresses, we go beyond the limit of what the body can manage and things begin to break down, and symptoms begin to appear.
Often for people who are suffering, there’s an overload of both physical and mental stresses. Most medical care is designed around dealing with those physical stresses, which is important. That can be eradicating dysbiosis, stabilizing autoimmunity, improving digestion, managing inflammation, and more.
But over the decade of working with people suffering with digestive issues and autoimmunity, we’ve found that whole process can be sped up pretty dramatically if people are also willing to look at and work on the mental-emotional processes that are also adding stress to the bucket. We find quite a few people, at least initially, are hesitant to work on these issues, instead wanting to just focus on the physical stuff.
That’s totally understandable, and by explaining concepts like the ‘stress bucket’ that you’re learning right now, you can understand why it’s so important to also work on mental-emotional stressors if you really want to feel better and heal. And this is one of the keys to true health and healing.
Let me share with you one more mystery that understanding the stress bucket clears up.
People doing holistic care often find that eliminating certain foods from their diet makes a huge difference in their health – they feel better, look better, perform better in their lives.
And they often notice if they go on vacation they can eat at least some of those foods that were bothering them with little or no problem.
They often jump for joy. “Hooray, I can eat those foods again.”
Then they come back home to their life and suddenly those foods are causing an issue.
What the heck?
Well if we think of the stress bucket, for most of us a good vacation is going to involve a dramatic decrease in the psychological stressors of our lives – not worrying about jobs, bosses, commuting, bills, our ‘to-do’ lists, and more. So a pretty big portion of what’s filling our stress bucket suddenly disappears.
Then when we eat those foods that are a problem, they add some more stress to the bucket, but our now half-empty bucket is able to contain that stress without overflowing. Yay, we can eat those foods.
But, when we go back to our regular lives, that psychological stress comes back and now eating those same foods that cause a physical reaction causes the bucket to overflow.
Does that make sense?
So during periods of intense physical stresses we need to do our best to reduce or deal with our psychological stressors. And during periods of heavy psychological stress we need to do as much as we can to limit our physical stresses.
So there you have it…
The stress bucket. If you really grok this concept, it can make a huge difference in your long-term health and your healing.
