It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health, and in this quick video, I want to talk to you about a concept we use here at Aspire Natural Health called the health triad.

The health triad are the three most critical health habits that are going to determine whether on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis you’re staying well or getting sick.

And the health triad are the most important element whether someone is stable and healthy or headed for a flare.

So let’s talk about them now. Are you ready?

There are five foundational health habits and they are:
1. Food
2. Movement or exercise
3. Sleep
4. Stress management
5. Connection & Purpose

Of those five the health triad are: food, sleep, and stress. That’s not to say the other two aren’t important – they are – but these three are the ones that will either keep you healthy or make you sick.

Imagine a triangle. One point is going to be food, the second sleep, and the third stress. All three are important.

One of the mistakes we see regularly is that people over bias food. They put all their energy and focus into what they’re eating. And it’s true, what we eat has a massive impact on our health. If you’re eating a ‘bad’ diet – and diets rich in added sugars, while flours, and refined vegetable oils are universally a problem. And then there’s also those foods which are a problem for you in particular – it’s going to be nearly impossible to get and stay healthy.

But just because you’re eating a healthy diet doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to be well. And we see this fairly regularly. People come to see us and they’re eating a healthier diet and they’ve seen things improve, sometimes very dramatically, but they’re stuck, still having issues, and not sure where to go from here.

And one of the mistakes we see is that they’re very reluctant and sometimes even hostile to the idea of looking at anything but food.

This is where the other two corners of the triangle come into play.

The second point is sleep. While many people think of sleep as a waste of time, it’s really our rebuild and restore time.

Without sleep our bodies do not heal, our minds do not learn. Most of us are walking around sleep deprived most of the time. And that’s going to make it very hard to heal. It’s very common for people to go on vacation, and freed from the worries and the duties of daily life, they sleep better and more. And they realize that their digestive symptoms and autoimmunity have improved.

Sleep is a hard one for all of us, and I’ll admit, I have trouble getting to bed on time just like most of the rest of us. But if we truly want to heal we need to sleep.

Then there’s the third point of the pyramid and that’s stress. In our modern lives we need to manage stress. There are not enough hours in the day to do all the things we want and need to do. And there is no one size fits all approach to stress management, the things that one person finds relaxing and recharging may drive another person crazy, so we each need to find the things that help us to de-stress and relax.

These three behaviors make up the health triad.

If you mess with one, you can tighten up the other two and usually do okay.

If two are out of whack, things are definitely in trouble, and you’re going to need to scramble to improve those two areas or take some significant corrective action to offset it.

And if all three are out of whack, you’re looking at a flare coming.



We see this all the time. Someone starts a new job, or has a baby, or life gets crazy. And so they’re stressed out, and then maybe they’re also not sleeping as much or as well, and if they’re really stressed for time, their food quality may be slipping too.

The good news is that now you know and can keep an eye on these three factors. If you’re not sleeping well, tighten up on your food and keep an eye on your stress. If you’re under a heavy stress load, than make sure food and sleep are tightened up. If you can’t eat as well, make sure you’re sleeping well and managing your stress. And if two factors are off track then recognize the warning signs and do what you need to to get them back on track.

By keeping an eye on the health triad you can maximize your chances of staying happy and healthy and out of a flare.
