‘As of now, spend a minimum of one hour a day doing whatever you are waiting to do until your finances are more secure, or until the children have grown and left the home, or until you have finished your obligations and you feel free to do what you really want to do. Don’t wait any longer….Do what you love to do, what you are waiting to do, what you’ve been born to do, now…Limited money and family obligation have never stopped a [person] who really wanted to do something, although they provide excuses for a [person] who is not really up to the creative challenge in the first place.’ — David Deida
I believe, along with David Deida, that we are each born into the world with gifts and talents and a purpose for our lives.
Another way of looking at it is, what do you want your tombstone to say?
‘Diligent worker, s/he filed paperwork with the best of them?’ No, that’s a pointless life, and we know it. Yet many of us live it anyway because….because….we do.
This is not to say everyone is going to find the cure for cancer or broker world peace. But each of us can make the world around us a little better for our having existed.
This doesn’t mean that your life becomes a bed of roses, that you’ll never have any problems or you’ll never be unhappy. That’s wishful thinking. But it does mean that behind the trials and troubles there will be a deep inner conviction that you’re doing the right thing, to keep going, to continue. When you’re fulfilling your life purpose your life has direction and meaning.
So if you haven’t found your purpose in life, and many of us haven’t, explore, try things. You may not find your passion right away, but you’ll know it when you find it.
UPDATE: I’ve also seen it argued that passion is the WRONG way to go. That passion shouldn’t be our guide, but that when we focus on something and become good at it, we become passionate about it. For more on this viewpoint, here is a video by Cal Newport.
And not everyone is going to be able to turn their passion into a profession. So your passion might be something you do in your spare time. That’s okay. At the end of the day it’s what makes you happy and leaves the world a little bit better, the rest is just details.
