Hey Folks,

It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health, and in this quick video, I want to talk to you about a new study I was reviewing showing that the problem with gluten, may not always be the gluten!

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock the last few years, you’ve heard that gluten can be a real problem for some people.

The most severe kind of gluten issue is celiac disease, an autoimmune disease triggered in a susceptible person when they eat gluten. In the past this autoimmunity was thought to only occur in the gut, but more recent research shows it’s possible to have celiac disease and have zero digestive symptoms, but loads of other symptoms.

We can talk more about celiac disease some other time, but I do want to leave you with this little nugget. If you or someone you know is chronically low in iron, even when they take iron, and other issues have been checked out, consider celiac disease. We’ve discovered and been able to help some people with that very problem.

Now besides celiac disease there’s a wheat allergy, and then there’s this nebulous category called non-celiac gluten sensitivity. These are people that don’t have celiac disease and who don’t have a wheat allergy, but have problems when they eat gluten.

Why?

One answer may be what else rides along with the gluten, and that’s what this recent study showed.

Wheat, the number one source of gluten, also contains other fibers such as xylose and arabinose. And these fibers are prebiotics or FODMAPs that feed the intestinal bacteria. These prebiotics help feed good bacteria which can help keep our guts, and the rest of us, healthy. But they can also feed problematic bacteria which can cause a whole load of digestive and other issues for us.

In this study of 60 people, the change from a high gluten diet to a low gluten diet caused a change in the gut bacteria, a reduction in bloating, a reduction in inflammation, an improvement in well-being, and a small weight loss.

Good stuff.

One other fascinating point of the study was that the low gluten diet actually reduced the amount of the probiotic Bifidobacteria in the participants guts. Now Bifidobacteria is a potent anti-inflammatory bacteria. It is often low in a lot of disease states, and a very helpful bacteria.

However studies of hunter-gatherer people and people eating a wheat free diet show low levels of Bifidobacteria, and it’s been hypothesized that the presence of Bifidobacteria in most adults living a Western lifestyle is a compensatory mechanism to deal with the immune stimulating effects of various poorly digestible wheat proteins.

I think it’s a fascinating idea, and one reason not to worry if you are healthy, wheat free, and find that your Bifidobacteria are low when they are tested.

So there you have it…

If you’ve found benefit from a gluten free diet, it may have nothing to do with the gluten and everything to do with the fibers that come along with the gluten.

Even if you don’t have celiac disease it’s possible to have a problem with gluten containing foods.

Non celiac gluten sensitivity here, I take probiotic do I want it to include bifidobacteria? Or no?

    • Tim Gerstmar says:

      Hi Carrie,
Since Bifidobacteria are anti-inflammatory and most of us are dealing with some degree of inflammation, I generally recommend probiotics that include Bifidobacteria.

      Hope that helps!

      Best,
      Dr. Tim Gerstmar
