Hey Folks,

It’s Dr. Gerstmar from Aspire Natural Health, and in this quick video, I want to talk to you inflammation, chronic inflammation, and autoimmunity.

Now a lot of people have heard that inflammation is at the root of most of the issues that are hurting us these days.

But most people don’t actually know what inflammation is. Are you ready to find out?

Okay, write this down!

Inflammation simply means the immune system is active. When the immune system turns on certain things happen, and those things are what we call inflammation.

Now there are heat, pain, redness, swelling, and loss of function.

We can see all of these symptoms best when we hurt ourselves. If you slam your finger in a door. Ouch! It hurts, swells up, gets hot and red, and you can’t use it very well, or maybe not at all.

These are all signs of inflammation. You injured your finger and the signals from that injured finger turn on your immune system which causes that heat, pain, redness, swelling, and loss of function. Those are things we consider bad because they hurt. But the immune system is also doing a lot of good stuff as well. Like fighting off any infections that might be trying to get into your damaged finger, and it’s also starting the repair and healing process.

All of this is an example of what we call acute inflammation. When we get injured, or when we’re trying to fight off a cold or flu, our immune system turns on creating inflammation. And while it may be uncomfortable for us, it’s necessary. If we shut off all that inflammation, as can be done with high dose steroids, our immune system can’t function any more and that infection could kill us, and those wounds won’t heal properly.

In acute inflammation, we recover, the finger heals, or we fight off the cold or flu and the immune system turns back off again. All is well.

Now in chronic inflammation, the problem is for a variety of reasons the immune system doesn’t turn off. And this is the problem driving many of the diseases we’re dealing with today from heart disease, to diabetes, to cancer, and much more. Our lifestyles either promote chronic inflammation or soothe it. Things like chronic infections – in the gut, or in the body can keep the immune system turned on. And much more.

Now, people ask, what’s the difference between chronic inflammation and autoimmunity.

And there’s a key difference. Are you ready.

Chronic inflammation doesn’t have to include autoimmunity, but autoimmunity always includes chronic inflammation.

That’s one of those all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares kind of thing. Yay for geometry!

Okay the biggest issue here is that in autoimmunity the immune system has identified some part of our body as an enemy and it fighting to destroy it. Depending on what part of your body is affected you will have a different disease name. If it’s your brain than you have MS, your joints you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and your thyroid you have Hashimoto’s.

Because your immune system normally can’t get rid of a part of your body, it’s constantly going to stay on, thinking there’s an enemy, and that is going to cause chronic inflammation.

Now in non-autoimmune chronic inflammation, the immune system is not targeting a part of your body, but other factors, like we’ve mentioned are keeping your immune system turned on.

The problem in non-autoimmune chronic inflammation is that the immune system causes collateral damage. Tissues and organs get damaged by this constant immune system activation leading to many of the diseases we’re dealing with – heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and more.

Alright, so there you have it…

Inflammation means the immune system is active.

In acute things like injuries and infections this is a very good thing, and once the infection is gone or the injury has healed the inflammation turns back off again.

In chronic inflammation, for a variety of reasons the immune system doesn’t turn off and the collateral damage that piles up over the years can cause us major problems.

And in autoimmunity the immune system has wrongly identified part of our bodies as an enemy and is attacking it, causing damage directly, PLUS causing chronic inflammation that causes additional collateral damage.

Not good! But there’s a lot we can do to help!
